Apple Unveils AirPods 5: New ANC, Better Sound, Siri AI and Live Translation

Apple has officially unveiled AirPods 5, bringing a significant collection of audio and AI-focused upgrades to its open-ear wireless earbuds. The new AirPods introduce Active Noise Cancellation, improved audio architecture, hands-free Siri AI features and Live Translation.

Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, and the earbuds officially became available in stores on September 18. The standard model starts at $129, while AirPods 5 with a Wireless Charging Case cost $149. (Apple)

The new generation represents an important shift for Apple’s more affordable AirPods because features that were previously associated with higher-end models are now moving into the standard AirPods lineup.

AirPods 5 Features Active Noise Cancellation

One of the biggest upgrades is Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

Apple says AirPods 5 can remove up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. The improvement comes from a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture combined with updated computational audio algorithms. (Apple)

AirPods 5 also include:

  • Active Noise Cancellation
  • Transparency mode
  • Adaptive Audio
  • Conversation Awareness
  • Personalized Spatial Audio
  • Next-generation Adaptive EQ

The open-ear design remains an important part of the AirPods 5 experience. Instead of using silicone ear tips like AirPods Pro, the earbuds are designed to sit in the ear without creating the same sealed feeling.

Apple has also improved Transparency mode to make voices and surrounding sounds feel more natural.

Better Sound Quality

Apple has redesigned the acoustic system inside AirPods 5.

The new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ are designed to provide richer and more detailed sound across a wider range of ear shapes.

Personalized Spatial Audio is also supported, creating a more immersive listening experience with compatible content and devices. (Apple)

For people who use AirPods for music, podcasts, movies and video calls, the combination of improved acoustics and computational audio could make AirPods 5 a substantial upgrade over older entry-level AirPods.

Siri AI Comes to AirPods 5

AirPods 5 are also designed around Apple’s expanding AI ecosystem.

When paired with a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, users can access Siri AI hands-free. Apple says the new Siri can understand personal context and interact with information across apps such as Messages and Mail. (Apple)

For example, users could ask Siri to:

  • Play a song mentioned in a message
  • Find information from an email
  • Perform actions within supported apps
  • Answer questions using broader world knowledge
  • Dictate messages more accurately

AirPods 5 also support Siri Interactions, allowing users to respond to Siri by nodding their head or shaking their head.

That means some interactions can take place without reaching for an iPhone.

Live Translation on AirPods 5

Another major feature is Live Translation.

Powered by Apple Intelligence, Live Translation allows AirPods users to hear conversations translated into their preferred language.

Users can activate the feature through Siri, by pressing both AirPods stems, or through the Action button on a compatible iPhone. Apple says users need compatible Apple devices, current software and supported languages for the feature. (Apple)

The feature could make AirPods particularly useful for international travel, business conversations and everyday communication across languages.

However, Apple notes that Live Translation isn’t available in every language or region.

AirPods 5 Battery Life

The more expensive AirPods 5 model with the Wireless Charging Case also receives a battery improvement.

Apple says AirPods 5 with ANC can provide up to five hours of listening time on a single charge. With the charging case, total listening time reaches up to 22 hours with ANC enabled. (Apple)

The Wireless Charging Case supports:

  • USB-C
  • Qi-compatible chargers
  • Apple Watch chargers

The $149 version also introduces a swipe-based volume control on the stem, giving users a convenient way to adjust volume without reaching for their phone.

AirPods 5 Price and Release Date

Apple is offering two versions of the new earbuds.

AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 4

The biggest change is that Active Noise Cancellation is now available in the AirPods 5 lineup starting at $129.

Apple says the new earbuds can reduce up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. AirPods 5 also bring updated acoustic architecture, improved Adaptive EQ and Apple’s newer AI-powered features. (Apple)

The $149 version adds features that could make it particularly attractive to people who frequently use their AirPods throughout the day, including wireless charging and volume controls.

A More AI-Connected Pair of Earbuds

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of AirPods 5 isn’t simply better audio.

Apple is increasingly turning AirPods into a hands-free interface for its AI ecosystem.

With Siri AI, head gestures, Live Translation and Apple Intelligence integration, AirPods are becoming more than traditional Bluetooth earbuds. They can increasingly serve as a way to interact with information without constantly looking at a screen.

That direction is consistent with Apple’s broader push to integrate AI into everyday devices.

A More Environmentally Conscious Design

Apple says AirPods 5 contain 40% recycled material overall. The Wireless Charging Case uses 70% recycled plastic, while the battery uses 100% recycled cobalt. Apple also says the earbuds are manufactured using 35% renewable energy across the supply chain. (Apple)

The packaging is also fiber-based and designed to be recyclable.

Are AirPods 5 Worth Considering?

AirPods 5 combine several upgrades that previously required stepping up to Apple’s more expensive audio products.

For $129, buyers get an open-ear design, Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, improved sound and access to features such as Live Translation when paired with compatible Apple hardware.

The $149 version adds wireless charging, improved battery life and stem-based volume controls.

The biggest consideration is Apple’s ecosystem. Some of the most advanced features depend on compatible iPhones, Apple Intelligence and the latest versions of Apple’s operating systems. (Apple)

For users already invested in Apple’s ecosystem, AirPods 5 could become an especially useful combination of wireless audio, noise control and AI assistance.

The Bottom Line

Apple’s AirPods 5 are more than a routine update. The company has brought Active Noise Cancellation to its $129 open-ear AirPods, improved the acoustic system and added features that connect the earbuds more closely with Apple Intelligence.

With Siri AI, Live Translation, improved sound, Personalized Spatial Audio and up to 22 hours of total listening time with the Wireless Charging Case, AirPods 5 demonstrate how Apple’s earbuds are evolving from simple audio accessories into intelligent, hands-free computing devices. (Apple)

As Apple continues developing its AI ecosystem, AirPods could become an increasingly important way for users to interact with technology without constantly pulling out their phones.

Apple AirPods 5 are available now, starting at $129 in the United States. (Apple)
