Pi Day

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

Pi Day

The irrational number Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. In addition, as an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. Only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, however, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

Calculate Pi (using the Nilakantha series) and Python

P = 3
MC = 1
C = 1
for MC in range(1,50000):
P = P + (4/((C+1)*(C+2)*(C+3)) – 4/((C+3)*(C+4)*(C+5)))
PI = ‘%10.60f’%(P)
print (PI)
C = C + 4

You will need run this code billions of iterations to begin to approach calculating Pi. Of course, that is why Pi is so fun!

Go here to run the program code. Just click the green run button.

Note: 22/7 is NOT Pi

By measuring circular objects, it has always turned out that a circle is a little more than 3 times its width around. In the Old Testament of the Bible (1 Kings 7:23), a circular pool is referred to as being 30 cubits around, and 10 cubits across. The mathematician Archimedes used polygons with many sides to approximate circles and determined that Pi was approximately 22/7. The symbol (Greek letter π) was first used in 1706 by William Jones. A ‘p’ was chosen for ‘perimeter’ of circles, and the use of π became popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737. In recent years, Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits past its decimal. Only 39 digits past the decimal are needed to accurately calculate the spherical volume of our entire universe, but because of Pi’s infinite & pattern less nature, it’s a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

School Shootings 2018

school shootingsAs always this behavior is despicable. The issues around School Shootings need to be discussed and changes need to be made in the following areas.

  1. Physical security within the schools.
  2. Identification of individuals that may be prone to this type of behavior.
  3. Control access to weapons that can produce mass slaughter.
  4. Human life is sacred.

Lawmakers, get together and discuss. or you might find yourself without a job.

Family Cookbook

Feel Free to download our family cookbook. It is filled with all of our favorite recipes. The original version of this booklet was made for a family reunion in the 80’s. Some day, I would like to update and publish online.

Download Family Cookbook

A few tips to save time and make your best Family cookbook:

• Start with clean copy. Although I generally found custom software easy to use, it is not the best choice for copy-editing. Use a document-editing software like Word to make any corrections to your recipes before pasting them into the main cookbook.

• Figure out the page layout before you get started. Play around with the placement of the recipe text, the font size of the title, and other layout details until you get it right. Then input the rest of the recipes. This will save you the headache of changing your layout halfway through, and having to manually fix each recipe.

• If you have time, order a proof book. Before placing a big order, get a single copy of the book so you can see exactly what the finished cookbook will look like. I didn’t have enough time to do this, and ended up with an error in photo resolution that hadn’t been visible on a computer screen. It didn’t ruin the book, but I kicked myself for not getting a proof copy.

Cookbooks can be small and affordable, I love the idea of making them an annual tradition. You could break your grandmother’s best recipes into volumes (cakes, casseroles, vegetables, etc.) and give out one each year, or collect your favorite new recipes of the last year and give them out annually to friends and family who like to cook.

Password Management

Password Management

Ok, a quick guide to passwords. Use Passpack. It’s free (up to 100) and easy.

The average person will not be able to remember the 10’s and sometimes 100’s of passwords needed to manage your daily life. One option is to make them easy to remember (also easy to guess). Another option is to use the same password over and over (putting all your eggs in one basket). The best option is to use a password management program or website to remember your passwords.

I use Passpack for password management because they use a highly encrypted website that not only requires a master password but requires a master passphrase. Your master passphrase is encrypted so that even the folks at Passpack can not recover it for you.

We never have your un-encrypted data. Even if our servers were hacked your passwords would be safe.

Strong passwords combined with having many passwords can cause headaches. Our manager helps eliminate that by letting you tag, sort, search and manage multiple logins per site. Passpack is available to you from any browser, anywhere, anytime, no need to carry yet another device or install on multiple computers.

Good Password Guidelines

Things to include

1. At least eight characters.
2. One or more of each of the following:
◦lower-case letter
◦upper-case letter
◦number
◦punctuation mark
3. Lookalike characters to protect against password glimpses. Examples: ◦O as in Oscar and the number 0.
◦Lower-case l and upper-case I.
◦The letter S and the $ sign.

Things to avoid

1. Words you can find in the dictionary.
2. Passwords shown as “example strong passwords.”
3. Personal information, such as names and birth dates.
4. Keyboard patterns, like qwerty or 12345. Particularly avoid sequences of numbers in order.
5. Common acronyms.
6. All one type of character – such as all numbers, all upper-case letters, all lower-case letters, etc.
7. Repeating characters, such as mmmm3333.
8. The same password you use for another application.

Memorable password tips

While passwords that are easy for you to remember are also less secure than a completely random password, following these tips can help you find the right balance between convenience for you and difficulty for hackers.
1. Create a unique acronym for a sentence or phrase you like.
2. Include phonetic replacements, such as ‘Luv 2 Laf’ for ‘Love to Laugh.’
3. Jumble together some pronounceable syllables, such as ‘iv,mockRek9.’

Keep your password secret

1. Never tell your password to anyone (this includes significant others, roommates, coworkers, etc.). If you need to grant someone access to your account, set up a separate username and password for that person.
2. Never write your password down, especially not anywhere near your computer.
3. Do not store your password in a plain text file on your computer.
4. Never send your password over an unencrypted connection – including unencrypted email.
5. Periodically test your current password.
6. Update your password every six months.

Steelers Schedule 2017

The Steelers success last season has them in the national spotlight this season, as the Steelers Schedule 2017 includes five nationally televised primetime games, giving Steelers Nation plenty of opportunity to see them in action.

And for the second-straight year, and only the second time in team history, the Steelers will play on Christmas Day. The Steelers will travel to Houston to take on the Texans at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 25, one of only two games to be played that day.

The Steelers kick off the season on the road against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 10, a 1 p.m. game against their AFC North rivals.

Things get rolling at Heinz Field on Sept. 17, when the team hosts the Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. It’s then back on the road for games against the Chicago Bears (Sept. 24) and Baltimore Ravens (Oct. 1), before returning home to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars (Oct. 8) at Heinz Field. All three games kickoff at 1 p.m.

The Steelers head to Kansas City on Oct. 15 (4:25 p.m.), where they defeated the Chiefs last year in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. Then it’s back home again for a matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals at Heinz Field on Oct. 22 (1 p.m.).

The first of five primetime games in a seven-week span will take place on Oct. 29 when the Steelers are on NBC’s Sunday Night Football against the Detroit Lions at 8:30 p.m. The following week they will have their bye (Nov. 5) and then travel to Indianapolis on Nov. 12 to take on the Colts at 1 p.m.

The Steelers begin a stretch of four-straight primetime games when they host the Tennessee Titans on Thursday, Nov. 16 on NBC/NFLN (8:25 p.m.), followed by a home game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football on Nov. 26 (8:30 p.m.). The Steelers will be on the road against the Bengals on ESPN’s Monday Night Football on Dec. 4 (8:30 pm.). The primetime blitz concludes with a Sunday night game against the Ravens at Heinz Field on Dec. 10 (8:30 p.m.).

A rematch of the AFC Championship Game will be at Heinz Field on Dec. 17 when the Steelers host the New England Patriots at 4:25 p.m.

The team will once again play on Christmas Day when the Steelers travel to Houston on Monday, Dec. 25 for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff on NBC and NFLN.

The season wraps up the way it began, against the Browns, when the Steelers host them for the finale for the second-straight year, a Dec. 31 matchup at Heinz Field at 1 p.m.

All Steelers preseason and regular season games can be heard on the Steelers Radio Network on WDVE-FM (102.5) and WBGG-AM (970) as well on Steelers.com.

2017 Hyundai Tucson

2017 Hyundai Tucson
2017 Hyundai Tucson

Third generation is charmed for the 2017 Hyundai Tucson. This version of the compact-crossover SUV gets just about everything right. Previous versions were competent, but not quite competitive with the class-leading Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. This third generation gets it right, though. Hyundai reinvents its 5-passenger compact SUV with an eye-catching exterior design, the latest technology and safety aids like automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, and an available 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that gets up to 32 mpg. A lease-only hydrogen-powered fuel-cell version based on the last-gen platform remains available, but only in California. With a starting price of under $24,000 and improvements upon its former self in almost every category, the Tucson takes on the segment’s best.

Interior

The base Hyundai Tucson SE offers a 6-way-manual seat, but skip that and move up to the Sport or Eco, which comes with an 8-way-power seat with lumbar. The sensible dash offers big vents, simple instrumentation, and buttons and knobs for climate and audio controls, even if you opt for a higher-end model and its touch-screen interface. Simplicity extends to the digital display between the gauges, which doesn’t overload the driver with info. Even if it’s not best-in-class roomy, the comfortable rear seat works just fine, and the cargo area’s adjustable floor also includes storage for the cargo cover.

Exterior

There’s no question the 2017 Tucson is a sharp-looking compact SUV. The big grille, flowing lines and LED-accented headlights bring it into the same fold as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport — very good company. The front end’s styling centers on that trapezoidal grille, with lines flowing over the hood and across the fenders to the rear, blending into the tail lights. Under the pretty styling is a chassis that uses more than 50-percent high-strength steel, providing a strength that makes the Hyundai Tucson safe and stable. If the hydrogen-powered Hyundai Tucson’s design looks older, it’s not your eyes. The fuel-cell Tucson remains based on the last-gen platform.

Young Sheldon – Spinoff from the Big Bang Theory

Young Sheldon

Young Sheldon

It’s 1989, and we meet nine-year-old Young Sheldon Cooper, the beloved character from THE BIG BANG THEORY. Young Sheldon has skipped four grades to start high school alongside his less-intellectual older brother. We get a peek into the early years–with voiceover from Jim Parsons–of a genius who is misunderstood by his family, classmates and neighbors. His mother preps him with what she thinks is the only tool he’ll need to survive at his new school. To remind bullies that his dad’s the football coach and his brother plays on the team. His twin sister, who’s happy to stay in fourth grade, has a better sense of what awaits Sheldon than he does. Young Sheldon may understand Newtonian physics, but his blue-collar, church-going family only cares if that knowledge will help them win a football game.

Development of the prequel series began in November 2016.  The initial idea came from Parsons that he passed along to The Big Bang Theory producers. The following March, Armitage and Perry were cast, and the series was ordered by CBS. It is scheduled to premiere on November 2, 2017, airing after The Big Bang Theory, after a special preview on September 25, 2017.

Executive Producers: Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro, Jon Favreau, Jim Parsons, Todd Spiewak.

Cast: Iain Armitage, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Raegan Revord, Montana Jordan, Jim Parsons.

Porch remodel begins

Porch Remodel

We have begun our Porch remodel by building a 5 tiered retaining wall. The wall will help with the steep grade of the yard. Knock-out roses and Shasta daisy’s are planted in front and on top are lovely begonias and some tall grasses.

Tips from Lowes.com

The blocks for this project have a locking flange — which makes the installation easy. The interlocking blocks can be used to build walls up to 28 inches high. Follow the block manufacturer’s instructions concerning wall height limits.

Plan your layout. Avoid having downspouts pointed at the retaining wall and, if it’s against the house, keep soil and mulch well below the siding.

Your retaining wall design will determine how you mark the area. To mark a freeform layout, use a rope or hose to outline the shape. Then use a shovel to mark the outline. For straight lines, mark the entire bed area with stakes, string and marking paint. Mark curved corners by tying a string to a stake that’s equidistant to the edge — creating a compass — and spraying the curves with marking paint.

To determine how many blocks you’ll need per row, divide the total length of the wall by the length of the block. To see how many rows you’ll need, divide the ideal wall height by the height of the block — account for the first row to be half-buried. See Planning for a Block Retaining Wall for more information on estimating project materials.

Before you buy materials or begin work, check local building codes and your homeowner’s association regulations to see if there are any restrictions or requirements you need to follow. A permit may be mandatory in some areas.

Poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac

Poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac
Poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac

Everything you would ever want to know about these plants is here.

Important Information

Toxicodendron radicans, commonly known as eastern poison ivy or poison ivy, is a poisonous Asian and North American flowering plant that is well-known for causing Urushiol-induced contact dermatitis, an itchy, irritating, and sometimes painful rash in most people who touch it. It is caused by urushiol, a clear liquid compound in the plant’s sap. The species is variable in its appearance and habit, and despite its common name it is not a true ivy (Hedera), but rather a member of the cashew and almond family. Toxicodendron radicans is commonly eaten by many animals, and the seeds are consumed by birds, but poison ivy is most often thought of as an unwelcome weed.

Three “almond” shaped leaves

The deciduous leaves of T. radicans are trifoliate with three almond-shaped leaflets. Leaf color ranges from light green (usually the younger leaves) to dark green (mature leaves), turning bright red in fall; though other sources say leaves are reddish when expanding, turn green through maturity, then back to red, orange, or yellow in the fall. The leaflets of mature leaves are somewhat shiny. The leaflets are 3–12 cm (1.2–4.7 in) long, rarely up to 30 cm (12 in). Each leaflet has a few or no teeth along its edge, and the leaf surface is smooth. Leaflet clusters are alternate on the vine, and the plant has no thorns. Vines growing on the trunk of a tree become firmly attached through numerous aerial rootlets. The vines develop adventitious roots, or the plant can spread from rhizomes or root crowns. The milky sap of poison ivy darkens after exposure to the air.

The urushiol compound in poison ivy is not a defensive measure; rather, it helps the plant to retain water. It is frequently eaten by animals such as deer and bears.

Toxicodendron radicans spreads either vegetatively or sexually. It is dioecious; flowering occurs from May to July. The yellowish- or greenish-white flowers are typically inconspicuous and are located in clusters up to 8 cm (3.1 in) above the leaves. The berry-like fruit, a drupe, mature by August to November with a grayish-white colour. Fruits are a favorite winter food of some birds and other animals. Seeds are spread mainly by animals and remain viable after passing through the digestive tract.
