Steelers in the Playoffs

Tom Brady: Superstar?
Tom Brady: Superstar?

The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t allow a single touchdown in their Divisional playoff showdown with the Steelers. They lost anyway.

Chris Boswell kicked six field goals, and those 18 points were enough to carry Pittsburgh to an AFC Championship showdown with the New England Patriots. The Chiefs were dynamite when the Steelers hit the red zone, but couldn’t get enough from playmakers like Alex Smith, Tyreek Hill, and Jeremy Maclin to outscore a hampered visiting offense.

Kansas City put its bend-don’t-break defense on full display as Pittsburgh punched five different drives into the red zone, but came away with just nine points as a result. While one of those ventures was erased by the end of the first half, strong defensive stands, dynamic secondary play, and an acrobatic interception at the goal line prevented Ben Roethlisberger from finding the promised land.

But Pittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell wouldn’t be as easily denied. The 25-year-old set an NFL playoff record with his sixth field goal of the evening, splitting the uprights with a 43-yard kick that gave the Steelers an 18-10 lead with just over 10 minutes to play.

The Chiefs responded with a methodical 13-play, 75-yard drive that featured a pair of fourth down conversions to clip the Pittsburgh lead to 18-16. A two-point attempt to a wide open Demetrius Harris appeared to have tied the game at 18-all, but a blatant holding call on left tackle Eric Fisher erased the important scoring play. Alex Smith’s do-over pass from the 12 was deflected out of the end zone, and the home team was left with 2:43 and just one timeout to find a way to erase Pittsburgh’s two-point lead.

Strong special teams play pinned the Steelers at their own five on the ensuing kickoff, but a clutch third-and-three pass from Roethlisberger to Antonio Brown — Brown’s first reception of the second half — gave Pittsburgh the space it needed to run out the clock and escape its trip to western Missouri with a win.

The win was the Steelers’ ninth straight. They’ll hope to keep that momentum moving forward next weekend in New England.

Steelers win against KC.

New England is next. So, I thought I’d post a flattering picture of Tom Brady for all of the New England fans!

Christmas with the Keys

We had a great Christmas with the Keys. Austin, Diane, and Alan came in from Richmond, Va. and Doug traveled from Atlanta, Ga.

Wendy and I took Austin to Delallo’s Italian Grocery Store in Jeannette, Pa. A great place to get Christmas yumminess.

Right after returning from the airport with Doug, we had a nice (not so quiet) dinner at the House of 1000 beers in New Kensington, Pa.

The Christmas Eve service was at The United Presbyterian Church of New Kensington at 7:30 p.m.

Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas Day. The festival commemorating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Christmas Day is observed around the world. Christmas Eve is widely observed as a full or partial holiday in anticipation of Christmas Day. Together, both days are considered one of the most culturally significant celebrations in Christendom and Western society.

After Christmas with the Keys, we went to see the new Star Wars movie, Rogue One.

Review

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Black Friday is dead

Black Friday has changed in the past few years enough to cause me to officially declare it DEAD. They have marketed the fun out of it.

I’ll just say it. Stores should be closed on Thanksgiving day in order for all to enjoy the day with family, friends, or just themselves.

Black Friday is the day when retailers finally begin to turn a profit for the year. In accounting terms, operating at a loss (losing money) is called being “in the red” because accountants traditionally used red ink to show negative amounts (losses). Typically, this happens the day AFTER Thanksgiving.

It appears that retailers are having Black Friday sales from mid-October up to and including Black Friday. This dilutes the excitement and allure of waking up early the day after Thanksgiving, ad circulars clutched in hand, to get the deal of the year. There are no real deals anymore…no prizes…no fun. If you do go out on Black Friday, you will be greeted with stacks of “doorbusters” that haven’t sold in the previous days of “Black Fridays.” The retailers are not stocking any loss-leaders (a product sold at a loss to attract customers).

So, it is over, dead, “finito.” At least I still have the memories.

Election 2016

With Election 2016 less than a week away, I thought I might as well add my reflections and consternation to the pile. Why does the election process bring out the worst in America? This same process is a keystone to the governance of this great country. We are a democracy. We have been transferring command peacefully for 240 years. Why can we not live the process as we should live our lives. With honor, integrity, and humility. The power of negative advertisement is staggering. The common perception is that ALL politicians are crooks, dishonest, and of low morale behavior. Why? Because that is all we see and hear in the media.

What if the media was left out of the elections?

First of all, that would free up a staggering 305.4 million dollars (68m for Trump, 237.4m for Clinton). That certainly could help lower the deficit or feed or provide health care to some people.

Second, the media is after ratings. Which means that every single solitary utterance by a candidate is dissected for possible shock and awe value. Did they really mean what they said? Who cares, let’s twist and turn until we get everyone upset at the candidate. Third, let’s have celebrities tell us who is the best candidate. Really…really, why should I listen to a popular movie star? They are no different than you or I. What could they possibly know about the candidates that I can’t read or discern for myself. No one should tell us how to vote, it is a personal decision.

Of course I know that the media will never disconnect from the elections. And that negatives will always out weigh the positives in the news. But, let us as Americans hold our candidates to higher standards by voting for their stance on issues and base our opinions on known information.

Please vote! It’s the right thing to do.

Jack Rabbit Roller Coaster

Jack Rabbit is a wooden roller coaster located at Kennywood Park in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, USA.

Designed and built by John A. Miller and Harry C. Baker in 1921, it is one of the oldest still-running roller coasters in the world. The ride’s three trains were manufactured by Edward Vettel, Sr. in 1951 and contain three cars of six seats each. The aging cars are considered a part of the ride’s nostalgic experience but also lead to some young children being disallowed to enter the ride (36″ is the minimum), due to the use of a small lapbar to hold in riders. A popular early feature of the ride was a tunnel which covered the turnaround section after the first drop, but this was removed in 1947 when the new cars were ordered. In 1991, the tunnel was restored, at a slightly shorter length.

The Jack Rabbit was built shortly after Miller patented a new track design in 1921 (which all wooden coasters built since have used). This design involved the use of wheels both under and over the track, which allowed Miller to create the then enormous 70-foot (21 m) drop that is the attraction’s largest. It is most well known for its double dip following the lift hill. The double dip produces strong airtime that makes the rider feel that they will be thrown from the seat, and a feeling that the train leaves the track (it rises up but the upstop wheels keep it firmly on the rails).

According to Rick Sebak, producer of Pittsburgh history programs for WQED, the attraction was designed so that each train’s last seat would provide the strongest airtime, and therefore the most desired ride.
